An organized collection on information that a computer program can quickly select desired pieces of data. Examples of database programs include MySQL and MSSQL.

Data Transfer:
The total amount of outbound traffic from a web site, typically measured in gigabytes (Gb). Bandwidth is a rate and data transfer is a total

Dedicated Server:
When referring to web hosting, a Dedicated Server means your web site is the only one on the server. Needed for only very busy web sites.

Disk Space:
The amount of space available on your servers harddrive that you have available for your web site and database.

Domain Name:
Is the text name corresponding to the numeric IP address of a computer on the Internet. A domain name must be unique.

Domain Name System (DNS):
The set of databases that performs the correspondence between an IP address and the fully qualified domain name. Note: The domain name system contains a kind of naming tree for IP addresses, hosts, and domains, identifying each Internet node unambiguously.

Electronic Commerce is the term used when referring to exchanging, buying, or selling goods or services using the Internet.

Is a commercial script library which automates the installation of web applications to a website. Fantastico scripts are executed from the administration area of a website control panel such as cPanel.

Firewall:
Is a software or hardware gateway that limits access between networks in accordance with local security policy.

FrontPage Extensions:
A series of scripts that can be employed by Microsoft FrontPage users to add dynamic functions to a Web site.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP):
Allows users to upload or download files from a server using a simple program.

Gigabyte (Gb):
A measure of network traffic or storage space. 1 Gigabyte = 1024 Megabytes.

Google Adwords:
A Pay Per Click advertising solution by google that displays related sponsered listings along with the normal listings in a google search result.

Internet:
Sometimes called simply "the Net," is a worldwide system of computer networks - a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers). It was conceived by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. government in 1969 and was first known as the ARPANET.

Internet Information Server (IIS):
Microsoft's powerful Web server that can be installed on its Windows server operating systems.

Internet Protocol (IP):
Is the method or protocol by which data is sent from one computer to another on the Internet. Each computer (known as a host) on the Internet has at least one IP address that uniquely identifies it from all other computers on the Internet.

Internet Service Provider (ISP):
A business that provides subscriber-based access to the Internet. Subscribers can be individuals or businesses. ISPs operate at the fourth or lowest level of the Internet. At the third level, regional providers aggregate traffic from lower-order ISPs to the second, backbone level. The highest level in North America is the NAP (Network Access Point), which acts as peer-to peer interconnection points for the largest backbones. ISPs use Internet routers, servers and rack-mounted modems to provide a variety of services, including web site hosting, FTP service, e-mail accounts, unified messaging, audio and video broadcasting, Internet telephony and fax gateway services.

InterNic:
The Internet Network Information Center. The association of providers of domain name registration, information, and database services to the Internet.

An expression of how much time it takes for a packet of data to get from one designated point to another.

Linux:
Linux is a free open-source operating system based on Unix. Linux was originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers from around the globe.

Local Area Network (LAN):
A group of computers and associated devices that share a common communications line or wireless link and typically share the resources of a single processor or server within a small geographic area (for example, within an office building).

A unit of measurement. 1 Megabyte = 1,000 Kilobytes.

Microsoft Access:
Database management system that functions in the Windows environment and allows you to create and process data in a database.

Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL):
Microsoft's relational database used on windows servers.

Modem:
A modem (modulator/demodulator) is equipment that converts digital signals to analog signals and vice versa. Modems are used to send data signals (digital) over the telephone network, which is usually analog. A modem modulates binary signals into tones that can be carried over the telephone network. At the other end, the demodulator part of the modem converts the tones to binary code.

The most popular open source relational database. Available for Linux and Windows.

OC-1:
Is a SONET line with transmission speeds of up to 51.84 Mbit/s (payload: 50.112 Mbit/s; overhead: 1.728 Mbit/s) using optical fiber. This base rate is multiplied for use by other OC-n standards. For example, an OC-3 connection is 3 times the rate of OC-1.

OC-48:
Is a network line with transmission speeds of up to 2488.32 Mbit/s (payload: 2405.376 Mbit/s; overhead: 82.944 Mbit/s). OC-48 connections are some of the fastest data connections in use today. Faster than OC-3, OC-12 connections, and even surpassing gigabit Ethernet, OC-48 connections are used as the backbones of many regional ISPs. Interconnections between large ISPs for purposes of peering or transit are quite common. As of 2005, the only connections in widespread use that surpass OC-48 speeds are OC-192 and 10 gigabit Ethernet.

The unit of data that is routed between an origin and a destination on the Internet or any other packet-switched network.

Packet Switched:
Describes the type of network in which relatively small units of data called packets are routed through a network based on the destination address contained within each packet. Breaking communication down into packets allows the same data path to be shared among many users in the network.

Perl:
Practical Extraction and Reporting Language, is a programming language often used for creating CGI programs.

PHP:
Is a programming language that allows web developers to create dynamic content that can interact with databases. PHP full name is, PHP Hypertext Preprocessor.

POP3:
POP3 is the abbreviation for Post Office Protocol - a data format for delivery of emails across the Internet.

In packet-switched networks such as the Internet, a router is a device or, in some cases, software in a computer, that determines the next network point to which a packet should be forwarded toward its destination. The router is connected to at least two networks and decides which way to send each information packet based on its current understanding of the state of the networks it is connected to.

The most common and cheapest approach to web hosting. Usually the best way to go for most web hosting solutions.

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is a protocol used to send and receive email..

SQL (Structured Query Language):
Is a language that provides an interface to relational database systems. It was developed by IBM in the 1970s for use in System R. SQL is a de facto standard, as well as an ISO and ANSI standard.

Static IP Address:
A fixed Internet Protocol address that is the same for a network device every time it's used.

The basic communication language or protocol of the Internet. It can also be used as a communications protocol in a private network.

Is a Web Hosting industry term for the time during which a web server is operational. The industry benchmark at this point in time for availability is 99.9%

Unix:
A popular operating system, developed by AT&T in 1969, that was very important in the development of the Internet. UNIX allows more than one user to access a computer system at the same time. An early version of UNIX, which was used by most colleges and universities, incorporated TCP/IP and made Internet connections possible.
